Andalusian Vibes
This new series comprising gouache on paper and acrylic on canvas, celebrates Andalusia, Spain´s largest and southern-most region. Abstraction takes over yet often sits alongside figurative elements.
Coastal Andalusia is generally semi-tropical, and delights with its abundance of exotic flora, blue skies and the sea. The region is blessed with the Atlantic Ocean on its western fringe and the Mediterranean further along. Mountains, hills and fertile slopes and valleys also frame the Andalusian landscape.
Many of these paintings draw on Andalusia´s rich and vibrant culture, traditions and street art scene while black markings serve as a nod to Islamic calligraphy dating back to Moorish rule, particularly the gouache paintings.
As such, Andalusian Vibes delves into the region´s energy, mainly Malaga which oozes with cool, yet doesn´t shy away from its rough-around-the-edges reality, as reflected in entangled gestural marks. Rugged, flowing textures also complete the scene. After all, for paradise to be fun, it has to be imperfect.
